FoxPuppy I could hit "shuffle all" on my entire 2659 item Bandcamp collection and hear less variation than I do on this one excellent EP. Depthbuffer is a complex guy who makes complex music for complex people. A mad scientist of sonic creativity who does strange things with sounds and words that are such great food for the heart and the headphones.

SkyYamaha Fuck yeah synthesis !! knowing this is controlled by such a hands on approach to voltage is downright electrifying and brings out a life hiding in the wires, electrons, and circuits. Favorite track: Attack.

Tichounko Holy moly, what a dope concept & execution!

The EP begins like a soundtrack to a new (and better) Matrix movie. The 2nd track reminds me of classical-music-inspired art rock bands but with the duet of electric guitars replaced with synths.

The third gives us the vocals we love from the artist’s previous work, this time half sounding like a female voice and it’s beautiful.

I could go on but there’s a number of characters limit which I’ve depleted. Wonderfully surprising adventure altogether. Favorite track: Hold.

In the dead of the night You turn on the light Take fright at the sight of yourself In the mirror The image much clearer Than the picture You had in your head Of the life that you've lead Is this what other people see? Brain keeps you awake at night With imagined mortifications You're naked In inappropriate places Your first crush Your first brush with rejection So many little things that don't matter Years later Eating you away Pulling you away From the moment in which you exist Until you just subsist On guilt and shame Stop doing the things you'll regret But hindsight's a curious thing The only way to be what you believe Is to do what you believe before It's too late

about

Listening suggestion: next time you can't sleep, put on your favourite headphones. Something with a nice wide stereo image. Maybe some ANC to enhance the silence in the darkness. Set the volume to a comfortable level, hit play on the seamless mix (track 6) and contemplate every electron.

A five-track concept EP.

Everything is just signals. Neurons firing. AI training data. Bells ringing. Electrical impulses triggering your heartbeat. Voltages controlling the strength of an electromagnet, connected to a cone, vibrating the surrounding air, causing pressure waves that travel to your ears, ultimately perceived as sound.

With modular synths, this is taken to extremes. Voltage to control the pitch of an oscillator. Voltage to controll the cut-off or resonance of a filter. Voltages swinging high & low from LFOs, acting as magic hands, summed with the physical position of various front-panel controls to automatically sweep any parameter over a range. Voltage spikes triggering volume envelopes. Voltage spikes to advance synchronised clocks. Zero to five volts, five octaves, any root note you like.

And seeing as the control signals are just voltages, and the resulting audio is just voltages, who says sounds can't be the control signals for producing more sounds?

It's kind of mind blowing, but also easy to make things that do not sound in the least bit pleasing or musical. The first step is to calibrate everything, and I like to do that with a little sequence looping over 0v to 5v in one volt increments: five voltages, five triggers, five octaves; twiddle the potentiometers until the pitch spacing lines up nicely.

Oh, and if you have DIY oscillators as poorly soldered as mine, and a room with temperature fluctuations as large as mine, you'll be redoing that calibration a lot.

For the love of the signal.
